Guanacaste is surrounded by a chain of volcanoes stretching from the Cordillera de Guanacaste to the Cordillera de Tilaran. The Barra Honda National Park also protects important extensions of tropical dry forest.

Tourists can hike towards the peaks of volcanoes, including the area of Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. These mountains are also several rivers that flow to form an alluvial plain crossed by the Rio Tempisque.

In the months from June to October, when the rivers become enlarged due to the rains, these forests bloom with different shades of green.

The hot and dry climate of the Guanacaste makes the region a popular destination for those who want to escape from cold winter months in the northern latitudes.
