What Offshore Means

Fishing Beyond the Coastline

Offshore trips commonly run approximately 20–45 miles into blue water, and sometimes farther when conditions or target species require it. Captains look for current edges, temperature changes, birds, floating debris, bait schools and productive water color.

The day may include trolling teasers and rigged baits, pitch-baiting fish raised behind the boat, chasing tuna beneath birds and spinner dolphins, and working debris lines for mahi-mahi.

  • Best suited to full-day fishing
  • Targets pelagic and billfish species
  • Longer runs than inshore trips
  • Professional offshore tackle and electronics
  • Flexible techniques based on daily conditions

What Can You Catch Offshore?

The species mix changes with season, currents, bait and location. A flexible plan gives the crew the best chance to capitalize on the activity found that day.

Techniques & Tactics

How Offshore Fish Are Targeted

The crew adjusts the fishing program to the species, water conditions, bait and activity encountered during the trip.

1

Trolling

Teasers, dredges, rigged ballyhoo and lures create a spread designed to raise billfish and other pelagic predators.

2

Live Baiting

Bonito, small tuna or goggle-eyes may be slow-trolled where marlin, sailfish and other predators are feeding.

3

Tuna Casting

Poppers and stickbaits are cast into breaking fish, while vertical jigs reach tuna marked deeper in the water column.

4

Debris Lines

Floating logs, weedlines and debris concentrate bait and frequently hold groups of mahi-mahi.

5

Wahoo Runs

High-speed presentations cover productive edges and drop-offs for fast, aggressive wahoo strikes.

Where & When

  • Blue water accessible through much of the year
  • Strong mahi-mahi, tuna and billfish opportunities
  • Dry-season winds influence routes and conditions

Add an Inshore Fishing Day

Two fishing days provide better species coverage and flexibility. Pair an offshore day for marlin, sailfish, tuna and mahi-mahi with an inshore day for roosterfish, snapper, jacks and snook.

  • Different species and fishing techniques
  • Shorter coastal runs on the inshore day
  • A good option for mixed-experience groups
  • More flexibility around weather and sea conditions

Frequently Asked Questions

Offshore Fishing FAQ

Is offshore fishing available year-round?

Yes. Offshore fishing is available year-round, but the species mix and best region change with season, currents, winds and bait conditions.

How far offshore will we travel?

Many trips run approximately 20–45 miles, although the captain may fish closer or farther depending on the target species and conditions.

Should we book a full day?

Yes. A full day is strongly recommended for offshore fishing because it provides the range and fishing time needed to locate productive blue water.

Can we keep fish?

Marlin and sailfish are released. Legal table fish such as tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo may normally be kept within current regulations.

What happens if the sea is rough?

The captain makes the final safety decision. Depending on conditions and availability, the trip may be adjusted, moved inshore or rescheduled.

Is offshore fishing suitable for children?

It can be, especially on larger boats with shade, seating, air conditioning and a restroom. Families new to ocean fishing may prefer to start with an inshore trip.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Visiting anglers need the appropriate Costa Rica fishing license. Instructions can be provided before the charter.
