Trip Length Changes Where You Fish

A half day keeps you close to Costa Rica’s Pacific shoreline, where reefs, rocky points and river mouths hold powerful inshore species. A full day gives the captain the range and time to locate productive offshore water.

  • Half day: shorter runs and active light-tackle fishing
  • Full day: more range for blue-water species
  • Private captain and crew
  • Boat recommendations based on group size
  • Season and recent fishing reports considered

Frequently Asked Questions

Full- and Half-Day Fishing FAQ

Do you fish year-round in Costa Rica?

Yes. Costa Rica offers year-round fishing, although target species, weather and productive locations change throughout the year.

Are half-day trips good for children?

Yes. Half-day inshore trips are often the best option for families because runs are shorter, the water can be calmer and the fishing is interactive.

Can we catch marlin on a half-day trip?

A full-day offshore charter is strongly recommended for marlin, sailfish, tuna and mahi-mahi because the captain needs time and range to reach productive blue water.

Can we keep the fish we catch?

Billfish and roosterfish are released. Edible species such as tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo may generally be kept for meals, subject to regulations and the captain’s policy.

What if someone is worried about seasickness?

Consider a half-day inshore trip, eat lightly, stay hydrated and speak with your doctor beforehand about appropriate motion-sickness medication.

Is transportation to the marina available?

Private transportation can be arranged from many hotels and vacation rentals. Include your lodging location when requesting a quote.

What happens if weather makes fishing unsafe?

The captain makes the final safety decision. If conditions prevent departure, the applicable boat policy will determine rescheduling or the available solution.
